Why do honest people commit fraud? Very often, personal circumstances in one’s life can drive an otherwise honest individual to cross that ethical boundary. Whether its an addiction, financial pressure or just plain greed, these powerful ‘triggers’ can cause someone to lose their sense of right and wrong, in order to rationalize their illicit conduct. Fraud often occurs in organizations where the corporate culture breeds complacency. However, when armed with the tools and skills to know what to look out for, organizations can protect themselves in order to prevent/detect these kinds of schemes from occurring. Led by a seasoned forensic accountant and citing real-life cases, this engaging session will explore the profile of a typical fraudster and what drives people to cross to the ‘Dark Side’. It will consider the types of schemes that often victimize organizations, with a particular focus on payroll fraud and errors. The session will also discuss recent trends and best practices in fraud prevention, detection and investigation.
