Canadian Payroll Association

Edward Nagel, Principal of nagel + associates is pleased to be once again speaking at the Canadian Payroll Association’s Annual Conference, being held in Whistler, BC. Edward will be speaking on the topic “Understanding and Managing the Risks of Phishing Scams”.
Organizations of all sizes are falling victim to various types of phishing scams, which are attempts by external parties to fraudulently extract information through electronic communication from its employees, including usernames, passwords, banking information and other personal identification details. Phishing scams are often carried out with the broader objective of fraudulently extracting funds from the organization. Typically, such scams involve a seemingly legitimate person associated with the organization requesting payment or transfer of funds to a purportedly legitimate vendor or supplier of the organization, whereby the identity of the perpetrator is concealed through email ‘spoofing’ or by other similar means. Undoubtedly, these and other similar schemes can unleash havoc on any organization, causing financial harm, reputational damage as well as giving rise to human resource nightmares. Given that prevention—rather than detection—is the best deterrent against these types of schemes, this session led by a seasoned forensic accountant will provide participants with the tools and skills necessary to identify the most common phishing scams and how to protect against them.
