Edward Nagel, Principal of nagel + associates inc. is pleased to be once again participating in an MIAA workshop. Edward will be presenting on the topic, “Preventing and Detecting Occupational Fraud in the Municipal Sector”.

Municipalities—like other organizations in both the public and private sectors—have recognized that it is not a matter of IF, but rather WHEN they will be victimized by occupational fraud—or fraud committed from within the organization. The challenge is how to prevent the fraud from occurring in the first place, or at the very least, knowing what to look out for in terms of “red flags” in order to detect such schemes, should they be occurring. Citing real-life cases, this session will provide participants with first-hand experience from a forensic accountant’s various investigations and other engagements conducted, including the approaches taken to investigate the fraud allegations and outcomes. This session will also address the fundamental steps required to conduct an objective investigation, current trends in risk management and internal audit’s critical role in an investigation.
